Girl Scouts of the USA/NASA Experiences: A Vision for Girls in Earth
and Space Science

Workshop Locations: JPL, Edith Macy Conference Center (Briarcliff

Summary: Two workshops will broaden the knowledge of 50 national
master trainers to increase their understanding of an integrated NASA Earth
and Space Science Story. These master trainers will mentor trainers across the
nation, competitively selected from GSUSA councils with significant populations
of ethnically, economically, and/or geographically underserved girls.
Workshop for Informal Education Specialists
Workshop Dates: Nov. 7-10, 2004

Workshop Location: Kennedy Space Center
Summary: A Return to Flight public engagement event with informal
education venues (museums, science centers, planetariums) to prepare partners
to help NASA positively engage the public in experiencing the excitement of

An Innovative Collaboration Involving NASA's Office of Biological
and Physical Research, NASA Langley and North Carolina 4-H
Workshop Dates: Oct. 4-5, 2004, Jan 24-26, 2005

Workshop Locations: LaRC, 4-H Center (Raleigh, NC) Workshop
Session (Atlanta, GA)
Summary: A collaboration to inspire young people in North Carolina
to pursue careers involving STEM and to diffuse and utilize NASA education products
within North Carolina. Drawing linkages between the historic connection of the
4-H to biology, botany and health, with NASA research in human physiology, wellness
and the propagation and management of living organisms in space, the workshop
will develop a model program for collaboration with 4-H nationally.
Earth Explorer Institute
Workshop Dates: Nov. 14-19, 2004
Partners: Goddard Space Flight Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
Maryland Science Center, Science Museum of Minnesota, New England Aquarium,
Northwestern University, Society for Amateur Scientists, Science Directorate
(Earth and Space Science)
Workshop Location: GSFC and Maryland Science Center
Summary: An institute aimed at developing national programming
for communicating NASA Earth science content to the roughly 40 million American
adults who are attentive to science, space and environmental issues. Museums
will competitively apply to participate (http://www.mdsci.org/resource/earth-explorers-institute/)
and collaborate to plan and carry out at least three national Earth system science
programs.
NASA Informal Educational Partners for Excellence
Workshop Dates: November 7-12, 2004
Partners: Langley Research Center, Virginia Air and Space Center,
Aeronautics Research Directorate
Workshop Locations: LaRC and Virginia Air and Space Center
Summary: The outcome will create a group of "NASA Certified
Science Instructors" trained to develop science programming for K-12 students
at their institutions, host teacher workshops and disseminate NASA programs
and opportunities to other informal learning centers. Fifteen informal education
organizations will be selected to participate.
NASA Explorer Institutes

Focus Groups convened: Dec. 2004-Feb. 2005
Summary: The NASA Explorer Institutes (NEI) CAN will provide
members of the informal education community with an opportunity to compete for
funding support to host NEI Focus Groups. The purpose of the Focus Groups will
be to assemble experts from the informal education community to further identify
strategies and approaches that can be used to effectively implement the NASA
Explorer Institutes Program.
