2005 Funding Opportunity
07.13.05

The NASA Office of Education, Informal Education Division, has released an internal funding opportunity that encourages NASA Field Centers, Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) and/or NASA installations, in collaboration with Center Education Directors and Mission Directorate education liaisons, to submit proposals for FY 05 NASA Explorer Institutes (NEI) projects. All NEI projects must be conducted in partnership with members of the informal education community including, but not limited to, representatives of science centers, museums, planetariums, libraries, parks, aquaria, nature centers, botanical gardens, youth groups and community-based organizations.

Four categories of NEI projects will be considered for funding in FY 05: Professional Development Workshop Opportunities, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Teaching Tools and Products, Infrastructure Development Projects and Partnerships for Sustainability. Each category reflects the input NASA received from approximately 500 members of the informal education community who participated in FY 04 NEI projects.

The Informal Education Division anticipates that FY 05 NEI initiatives will be funded at a minimum of $25,000 and a maximum of $150,000. Approximately $1.2 million is available to support this effort. Additional funds from Mission Directorates, Field Centers, and/or external sources may be used to supplement NEI funded projects, but are not required. Originally, the Informal Education Division planned to support an external NEI Cooperative Agreement Notice in FY 05 in addition to the internal funding opportunity described above. Unfortunately, current budget constraints will only support internally managed NEI projects at this time.

If you have questions about this funding opportunity or seek more information about participating in partnerships, please contact one of the NASA Headquarters Informal Education staff listed below.

Jim Stofan, Director, Informal Education Division
Debbie Gallaway, Program Manager, NASA Explorer Institutes
Jason Freeman, Education Specialist, Informal Education
